Fairwaves Inc. is a winner of the GSMA Connected Society Innovation Fund for Rural Connectivity, a project which aims to support innovative mobile internet connectivity solutions for unconnected rural communities.

Fairwaves will showcase a number of innovations for rural coverage with key strategic partners, and will provide 2G and 3G coverage which will be software-upgradeable to 4G. This will be backhauled over satellite with SES Networks with traffic terminated locally in Ghana. The passive infrastructure will include iengineering’s 20m concrete-less tower design with Greenpole solar power system. All elements including radio, satellite backhaul and power will be monitored by Fairwaves’ cloud-based monitoring system. Helios Towers are supporting the deployment with GIS analysis.

UmSITE_Africa_Installation

The overall aim of the trial is to bring Vodafone mobile coverage to 16,000 underserved people in remote communities in northern Ghana with innovative solutions optimised for the rural market.

“Fairwaves is really proud to have been selected by the GSMA and Vodafone Ghana as winners of this grant. The only way to achieve sustainable mobile broadband coverage in rural areas such as northern Ghana is by deploying new and innovative technologies such as software-defined radio base stations, solar power and satellite backhaul to crack the problem. We are really grateful to DFID and the GSMA for this grant which will help us to demonstrate this to the wider market.”

– Albert Gardiner, CEO, Fairwaves, Inc.

XYNC (pronounced iks-sync) is your choice if you work on a massive MIMO system or have a large swath of spectrum to monitor. XYNC comes in the following variations:

XYNC Model Included XTRXs Transmit Receive
XYNC Quadro 4 8 channels (4 independent pairs), 30 MHz – 3.7 GHz 8 channels (4 independent pairs), 30 MHz – 3.7 GHz
XYNC Quadro 6 GHz RX 4 8 channels (4 independent pairs), 30 MHz – 3.7 GHz 8 channels (4 independent pairs), 1.8 GHz – 6 GHz
XYNC Octo 8 16 channels (8 independent pairs), 30 MHz – 3.7 GHz 16 channels (8 independent pairs), 30 MHz – 3.7 GHz
XYNC Octo x2 16 32 channels (16 independent pairs), 30 MHz – 3.7 GHz 32 channels (16 independent pairs), 30 MHz – 3.7 GHz

XYNC is based on multiple synchronized XTRX SDRs, so the maximum achievable RF bandwidth is a function of the individual XTRX RF bandwidths.

XCOM – is a compact, embedded x86 platform, which allows building inexpensive x86-based systems with special requirements:

  • unattended operation
    • resilience in the face of power failures and power voltage fluctuation
    • can be reliably reflashed to a new software release remotely
    • Coreboot support
  • supports different CPU models
  • a compact, IP65+ enclosure
  • passive cooling
  • special features to support XTRX SDR, UmTRX SDR, and other SDRs

XCOM is a carrier board for a popular COM Express Type 10 modules. Relying on the Computer-On-Module (COM) ecosystem allows us to optimize XCOM for reliable unattended operation so that you don’t have to design something from scratch. At the same time, many different COM Express Type 10 modules are available, from a variety of companies, so using XCOM helps you avoid CPU model lock-in.

Different approaches to design an embedded x86 systems are summarized in the table below:

Fairwaves XCOM Off-the-Shelf SBC In-House COM Carrier In-House Custom SBC
NRE Cost $1k $1k $100k $500k
Development Time 1 week 1 week 3 months 1 year
CPU Flexibility Yes No Yes No
IP65+ Rugged Friendly Yes Very few models Yes Yes
SDR-Friendly Yes No Yes Yes
Wide Input Power Range / Direct Battery Operation Yes Very few models Yes Yes
Coreboot Support Yes (selected COM boards) Very few models Yes Yes

XCOM is designed to be the ultimate platform for the Fairwaves UmTRX and XTRX Software Defined Radios (SDRs), but it works just as well with other USB, Ethernet, and miniPCIe SDRs. Your device might be deep underwater. Or hanging from a weather balloon. Or orbiting the Earth!

We designed XTRX, our latest software defined radio, with massive MIMO and 5G base stations in mind and it’s a fantastic endorsement that Airspan chose XTRX (with the RF chipset from our friends at LimeMicrosystems) for this UK5G testbed and our first 5G project.

Feb 2, 2018, Koror, Republic of Palau

PT Waves, Palau’s second mobile operator, is now live!

PT Waves is a new low-cost mobile operator leveraging Fairwaves technology to empower residents and visitors of Palau. Thanks to Fairwaves low-cost technology and a turn-key approach the network was built for maybe 5x less than traditional solutions and in a record time of just few months. A lower level of investment will enable PT Waves to make mobile communication affordable for all in the country which has previously had only one operator and excessive calling rates too expensive for most of the population.

This project marks an important milestone for Fairwaves – we built an entire Telco up from scratch, not just extend the coverage of an existing operator. Fairwaves provides and manages the radio and core networks, the billing system and interconnection with the global telephone network.

This is also the first commercial launch of FairFi – a WiFi with cellular experience, integrated with 2G/4G networks. With FairFi voice calling and low-cost data share one bill and offer seamless user experience.

We are looking forward to offering the same turn-key approach to all the upstart operators around the world. Now you can profitably connect the places which you couldn’t connect with traditional telecom vendors.

Coming to MWC? Get in touch!
